Why I LOVE RuPaul’s Drag Race

My daughter kept telling me about this show featuring drag queens, female impersonators who perform all over the world as gussied up, gorgeous versions of their selves. The first time I watched an episode with her, I thought the queens were too catty and bitchy with each other and literally couldn’t watch them be so petty with one another. But one episode hooked me. There is a part on every season of the show where they get to the final four contestants competing to be the top Drag Queen. RuPaul, in full glorious drag, pulls out a poster sized photo of the contestant at age 4 or 5 or 6 and asks each queen to speak to the little boy in the picture. This is totally Inner Child Soul Retrieval and part of the work I do with my clients. I bawl every single time. The Mama in me just wants these little babies to feel loved. So what if they’re effeminate? So what if they’re girly? So what if they’re different? Why is the world SO CRUEL to these boys? Do ya’ll realize that they kill themselves over this shit??

I love this show because in a world that forces everyone to fit in the tiniest, tightest box of “appropriate” self-expression, these bitches are fighting for their very lives. They are determined to not only BE who they are, but CELEBRATE who they are. And it is absolutely beautiful. They are creative and catty and funny. They are SURVIVORS. They made it through their horrible childhoods where they are belittled and rejected, kicked out by their parents, even abused by those who are supposed to love them and still, they find their way to Beauty and Expression. They are fearless.

The show inspires me every time I watch it. If these men who long to feel pretty and feminine can find a way to love their feminine side, surely we women can also find a way. Big, small, fat, skinny, young, old, funny, serious, smart, dumb-it doesn’t matter. Each queen transforms her insecurity and pain into entertainment, joy, pleasure, and laughter. GO GIRLS GO! I bow down to your courage and strength. Thank you for having the fire within you to show ALL of us how to love ourselves. Now sissy that walk…

I feel everyone should find their inner beauty. Inner reflects outer beauty as well. I’ve always felt that lgbt, transgender etc. Is a reflection of who that person was in a past life. Some of us male, some of us female. Some of us both at different times. It all carries inot the life we are present in now. To be able to openly share that with others has to be such a huge sense of self. What courage. And the beauty and confidence. ..wow! Love it!
